21 Sep (Thu): Hannibal, MO, and we are jacks down near the Mississippi River, French version of a Native American Ojibwe word, “Misi-ziibi”, meaning “big or long river”. In 1541 near present-day Natchez, MS, Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto was the first European to view the waterway and in 1682 French explorer Sieur de LaSalle became the first European to travel its full length. De Soto later died of fever and LaSalle was murdered by his own men. Hmmm, must have been something in the water.
