16 Mar (Mon): Port Isabel, TX. Major league baseball’s Spring Training is currently underway in various locations and truth be known “America’s Pastime” has direct roots right here. Exactly 180 years ago this month General Zachary Taylor arrived to establish Fort Polk as an army base during the Mexican War and several famous soldiers who were stationed here include Abner Doubleday, inventor of baseball. Written records mention a baseball-like contest being played at the fort. Take me out to the ball game. |
