02 Jun (Tue): Mesa Verde (Cliff Dwellings) Nat’l Park, CO, ending a two-week visit, hiking at 8,000’+ elevation, lungs working overtime. Nomadic peoples knew the area for thousands of years. About 550AD some stayed to build pit houses in cliff alcoves, around 750AD one-story rock shelters, then multi-level structures as mesa-top farming flourished until climate change made water scarce. By1300AD inhabitants had moved south, leaving the structures empty but their spirits still occupy the dwellings.
